Do Hair Salons Need a Website? A Straight Answer From an Austin Web Designer
I build websites for small businesses in Austin. Salon owners ask me this question more than almost anyone else. They have a full Instagram grid, a booking link in their bio, and a steady book of regulars. So do they really need a website?
Short answer: if you want new clients from Google, yes. If you are fully booked on referrals and plan to stay that way, maybe not. Let me walk through both.
Instagram fills your chair. Google fills your book.
Your regulars follow you on Instagram. New clients do not. They type "balayage Austin" or "hair salon near me" into Google and book with whoever shows up looking professional.
Instagram barely shows up in those searches. Google cannot read your posts the way it reads a website. Your beautiful grid is invisible to the people searching for exactly what you do.
That is the whole case in two sentences. Instagram keeps the clients you have. Google brings the ones you do not have yet. A website is how you show up on Google.
A booking link is not a website
Most salons I talk to have a Square, Vagaro, or GlossGenius booking page. Owners often think that counts as a website. It does not.
Those pages live on someone else's domain. They are built for people who already decided to book with you. They do not rank for searches like "best curly hair stylist South Austin" because there is almost no text on them for Google to read. No service descriptions. No neighborhood mentions. No answers to the questions new clients actually search.
Keep your booking page. It is great at what it does. But it is the checkout counter, not the storefront.
What a salon website actually needs
Not much. The salons that win on Google have simple sites that answer five things fast:
Services and real prices
List your services with actual prices or honest starting prices. "DM for pricing" loses people. Someone comparing three salons at 10pm will book the one that told them what a cut and color costs.
Photos of your work
Pull your best work from Instagram and put it on the site. Same photos, new job. On Instagram they entertain followers. On your website they convince strangers.
Your stylists
A short bio and photo for each stylist. People book people, not chairs. If a stylist specializes in curly hair, blondes, or vivids, say so. Those are search terms.
Location and parking
Where you are, which neighborhood, where to park. In Austin, parking anxiety is real. A salon in Mueller or on South Lamar that explains parking removes a reason to pick somewhere else.
One obvious booking button
Every page should have a Book Now button that goes straight to the booking system you already use. The website attracts. Your booking page converts. They work together.
When you can skip the website
I will be straight with you. Some salons do not need one yet.
If you are a single-chair studio, fully booked for six weeks out, and every new client comes from a referral, a website will not change your month. Spend the money on a better chair.
But think about where your bookings actually come from. If a stylist leaves and takes clients with them, or you move locations, or you want to raise prices and attract clients who pay them, the salons that show up on Google recover faster. The referral-only plan works until the day it does not.
What it should cost
You do not need a $5,000 agency site with a blog you will never write. A salon needs a focused site that ranks and books.
I build single focused pages from $999 and full sites for $1,499. They go live in days, not months. And you own everything: the code, the design, the domain. No monthly rent to a platform that raises prices whenever it wants.
That last part matters more than people think. Plenty of salon owners pay $30 to $50 a month forever for a template site they cannot take with them. Over three years that is more than a site you own outright.
See it before you pay anything
Here is how I handle the "is it worth it" question: I show you first.
Tell me about your salon and I will build a free preview of your website. You see exactly what it would look like before you pay a dollar. If you like it, we launch it in days. If you do not, you walk away and it cost you nothing.
